Intel NAND Products Group is introducing its latest solid-state drive (SSD) product with the Intel Z-P230 Parallel ATA SSD, a storage solution for value mobile and desktop systems.

According to Intel, the Z-P230 PATA SSD is a cost-effective storage solution designed to replace traditional HDDs in netbook and nettop systems, yet is 4x smaller and lighter than a standard 1.8-inch HDD with the same industry-standard PATA (IDE) connector.

The solid-state design eliminates all moving parts, making it more rugged and reliable for mobile designs. It also requires less power to extend battery life and enhance Intel computing platforms such as the Netbook Platform '08 supporting the 45nm Intel Atom processor N270 and Mobile Intel 945GSE express chipset, according to Intel.

The Z-P230 PATA SSD joins a family of SSD products from Intel and will come in 4Gbyte, 8Gbyte and 16Gbyte densities.

In 1,000-unit quantities, the 4Gbyte costs $25; the 8Gbyte part is $45.

The 4Gbyte and 8Gbyte products will be available in Q3 08; the 16Gbyte will be available in Q4 08.
