Amplifiers offer high-efficiency in next-gen CATV

RF Micro Devices Inc. has launched the industry's first gallium nitride (GaN)-based CATV amplifier modules, which will be used as power doubler amplifiers in the next-generation CATV infrastructure applications. These include line amplification and hybrid fiber coaxial optical nodes.

The D10040200PH1 and D10040230PH1 that feature 20dB and 23dB of gain are the first power doubler amplifier modules to use an ultralinear, high-efficiency GaN process technology. With the combination of the multiple compound IC technologies in a highly integrated, hybrid amplifier module, RFMD designers will create unprecedented performance across all critical multicarrier distortion parameters, at the same time increase output power capability and efficiency. These amplifier modules provide essential renovations over competing devices in all key parameters and offer the utmost in design flexibilityall while using CATV infrastructure OEMs with ease and have come to expect from industry standard SOT115J packaged amplifier modules.

Citing an example, either the D10040200PH1 or D10040230PH1 can be used by CATV infrastructure designers to apply in HFC optical nodes and increase final power output from 2dBmV to 3dBmV over competing devices while maintaining equivalent multicarrier distortion performance, particularly in carrier to intermodulation (CIN) noise levels. In addition, when best-in-class CIN performance is desired, RF output drive level may be reduced with minimal external tuningeasing implementation for equipment OEMs.

"RFMD's innovative introduction of GaN in the new-generation of CATV amplifier modules upgrades CIN performance at an opportune time in the CATV market," said Alastair Upton, general manager, broadband and consumer business unit, RFMD. As multiple system operators add up to the digitally modulated transmissions over their CATV infrastructure and push through fiber deep programs, the low distortion and high-output power of these breakthrough products enable OEMs to better service the demand for higher-performance CATV infrastructure equipment.
