Frontier Silicon has begun sampling the latest version of its digital audio broadcasting (DAB) receiver module, which employs a smaller version of its Kino 3 baseband processor IC.

The Venice 7 has been designed for the best cost and power efficiency, according to Frontier. It said the receiver module integrates better enhancements than its Venice 5 module, which is commonly used in most DAB receivers.

The module is fully compliant with the recently certified Europe-wide Profile 1 requirements from WorldDMB and European Broadcasting Union.

It is believed to provide a 50-percent reduction in power use compared to its earlier versions.

"The DAB market is growing and the focus is now very much on power drain reduction," said Mark Hopgood, director of marketing, Frontier Silicon.

He added the Kino 3 is the most cost-optimized multimode tuner module available. The company said the chip uses the most advanced IC manufacturing process technology to achieve the lowest power usage," but Hopgood did not confirm whether the part is now being built on a 65nm process. It is made by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Ltd.

The chip has enough memory to support DAB, DAB+, DMB-A and FM without the need for added cost of external SDRAM memory.

WorldDMB announced Profile 1 last month to facilitate the rapid growth of digital radio across Europe by employing receiver manufactures with the economies-of-scale that result from a single Europe-wide marketplace. Profile 1 defines the required functionality for mass-market digital radio receivers that use the Eureka 147 family of digital broadcasting standards.

The Venice 7 module includes all interfaces necessary for a fully functional radio that only needs power supply, display, keypad, audio amplifier and speakers to complete a product.
