High-current connector enhances overload capacity

Tyco Electronics has released a new single-pole high current circular connector for industrial applications, e.g. spindle motors. The HC20 circular connector is patterned to the patented HF6 spiral spring contact system and has voltage and current ratings of 690V/150A. The unit's robust die-cast zinc housing enables it to become resistant to both mechanical and chemical stresses. The connector has three housing variations such as panel mount, connector and coupling.

The connector has a silver plated copper crimping terminal and a silver plated brass pin/jack. The crimping socket allows conductor cross-sections of up to 50mm. Mating and unmating forces are minimized to a minimum for higher mating cycles with housing of at least 200 cycles and contact system of at least 500 cycles. The spiral spring multiplies the contact points between pin and socket, thus lowering contact resistance. This also improves the overload capacity of the high current contact.

The mechanical screw-locking device of the HC20 connector enables simple handling and increased security under vibration. The two-connector halves can be safely locked with only 2.5 turns of the union nut. A mechanical safety device prevents the plug connector from inadvertently loosening when the machine vibrates or is being serviced. The two-connector halves can be unmated by pulling the laterally attached security element to loosen the union nut.

The HC20 connector pins benefit from two geometries such as polarization and coding that permit inset implementation inside the housing with a gradual 45 radial rotation. Color-coding eases in identifying the position inside the housing. To achieve spindle motor polarity safety measures, up to eight coding possibilities are provided by the combination of polarization and housing coding. This also prevents confusing neighboring contacts and wrong connection of the spindle motor.

The HC20 connector is best used for wiring shielded and unshielded lines in cable racks. The devices have a wide temperature range from -40C up to +125C. Heat resistant Viton axial seals provide optimal tightness, and in the locked position, the device meets IP67 safety class requirements. Fiberglass reinforced Polyamid, known for its mechanical strength, rigidity and thermal stability is used to insulate the parts.
