Processor packs GPS for in-car navigation systems

Cartesio+ processor

STMicroelectronics NV has developed an application processor with an embedded GPS for next generation in-car and portable navigation systems.

The Cartesio+ processor integrates an ARM1176 processor with a GPS/Galileo positioning subsystem enhanced with indoor sensitivity, an advanced 3D graphics engine and a large set of connectivity peripherals, including multiple SD/MMC, CAN and USB with integrated physical layers. It is manufactured in ST's 55nm process technology.

The Cartesio+ processor can be coupled with the STA5630 GPS RF chip with integrated LNA and three other key components from the company's portfolio, namely the STW4210 power management chip, an audio processing amplifier/LED display driver and the STA2500D Bluetooth controller.

Cartesio+ is a scalable device available with two different feature sets, namely the STA2064 and STA2065, which have been optimized for BOM-sensitive and performance-demanding applications, respectively.

In May 2009, market tracker iSuppli reported that European chip suppliers dominated the 2008 global rankings for automotive infotainment semiconductors. It specified that ST held on to the top spot and managed double-digit revenue growth, mainly due to the design-ins for its Cartesio combined media processor and GPS baseband chip.

The company has started sampling to lead customers and expect to begin volume production in

December 2009. The first generation of the Cartesio processor was introduced in October 2007.
