Asia-Pacific PC market up 35 percent in Q2 2010

Notwithstanding low expectations due to mixed economic forecasts, the global PC market grew 22.4 percent in the second quarter of 2010 while in the Asia Pacific, Japan excluded, growth hit nearly 35 percent over a year ago. Analysts at International Data Corporation (IDC) cited "an aging commercial installed base, a proliferation of low-cost media-centric PCs, and low PC penetration through much of the world" as the key drivers of the PC market's recent rebound.

Desktop PC shipments performed much better than portable PC shipments, indicating that businesses have continued with equipment replacements, somehow offsetting some sluggishness in the consumer market. "The surge in consumer activity seen in the past two quarters has started to slow as expected, while commercial replacements continue to grow," said Bob O'Donnell, IDC Vice President for Clients and Displays. "We expect consumer activity to remain healthy, but gradually slow through the end of the year, while commercial market growth will be more stable, reflecting a planned replacement cycle over the next several years."

IDC also reported that in Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA), the PC market met 2Q 2010 forecasts despite threats posed by unfavorable exchange rates and growing public debt; in Japan, the PC market continued to expand by double-digits in the second quarter, but did not approach the more than 25 percent growth seen in the first quarter; in the United States, projections for a near 18 percent growth, to build on a 19 percent increase in Q1 and more than 25 percent gain in Q4, did not materialize.

HP continued to lead the pack of vendors in terms of global shipments in Q2 2010, shipping 14.76 million units compared to 13.15 million units in Q2 2009. Dell and Acer group followed neck-and-neck shipping 10.61- and 10.24 million units, respectively. The most dramatic growth over last year was exhibited by Asus, shipping 4.31 million units, 83 percent over its Q2 2009 shipment.
