Lederer is not an engineerhis background is in business administrationbut that's certainly not a prerequisite to lead a microprocessor supplier (see OTELINI, PAUL). But as head of a division that sells wireless chips, Lederer might not bring to the table key connections with AMD's core customers.

David L. Johnson, Dell
From the completely wild speculation file: David L. Johnson, senior vice president of corporate strategy at Dell Inc. Johnson is neither an engineer nor a "chip guy," but in his role working with Michael Dell on the development of short- and long-term strategy for the No. 2 ranked PC vendor, Johnson may have the insight and experience AMD needs to finally increase market share after years of stagnation. His resume also includes 27 years at IBM.

If not Johnson, it's entirely possible that AMD might entertain the idea of bringing on board another VP-level executive from Dell, HP or Acer.
