Eight bets for AMD chief

Keywords:Dirk Meyer? AMD CEO potential candidates?

Who is the best person to take the seat vacated by Advanced Micro Devices Inc. CEO Dirk Meyer? An informal, unscientific poll of EE Times editors has drawn up a list of candidates to succeed Myer, who resigned in "mutual agreement" with the company's board of directors on January 10.

AMD, of course, isn't talking about what executives are on its short list. But we think the following eight candidates have the right experience, track record and cachet to be considered for the position.

 Pat Gelsinger

Pat Gelsinger, president and chief operating officer for EMC Corp.'s Information Infrastructure Products group, is best known for his 30 years at Intel.

Pat Gelsinger, EMC Corp.
Pat Gelsinger, president and chief operating officer for EMC Corp.'s Information Infrastructure Products group, is best known for his 30 years at Intel, where he was the company's first chief technology officer and later senior vice president and general manager of Intel's Digital Enterprise Group. Earlier in his career, Gelsinger was the lead designer of Intel's 386 processor.

Gelsinger seemed in contention to be Intel's next CEO until Sean Mahoney emerged as Paul Ottelini's protg? and was named co-general manager of Intel's Architecture Group. Gelsinger left Intel in 2009 for the No. 2 job at EMC.

Gelsinger has industry stature and charisma, qualities the AMD board is believed to be seeking in a new CEO.

 Sanjay Jha

Sanjay Jha, , chairman and CEO of Motorola Mobility. Jha has led Moto's resurgence in handsets, thanks largely to the Android OS.

Sanjay Jha, Motorola
Sanjay Jha, chairman and CEO of Motorola Mobility, might well be AMD's dream candidate (though one it is very unlikely to land). Jha is turning out to be a turnaround artist and a magician. He was a rising star at Qualcomm Inc.legendary for his detail-oriented management and willingness to pick up the phone to call a rank and file designer to ask about the status of a projectwhen he was lured to Motorola and became co-CEO, charged with running the company's handset businesswidely believed at the time to have its best days behind it.

But Jha has led Moto's resurgence in handsets, thanks largely to the Android OS. Motorola shipped an estimated 14 million Droid smartphones last year, putting it back among the leaders in the handset world. In October, the company's handset business broke even for the first time in three years, a quarter ahead of plan.
