austriamicrosystems AG has expanded its active noise canceling (ANC) IC family with the introduction of the AS3400 and AS3420. The devices target wired or wireless mono communication headsets. The ICs feature the lowest power available, giving at least 20 percent longer battery life than other ANC solutions. They also improve audio performance with a 10dB positive SNR, improving intelligibility, added the company.

The ANC IC AS3420 is a fully differential ANC speaker driver IC specifically designed to connect directly to common SoCs for mono Bluetooth applications. It can also be used with other types of wireless headsets. The fully analog implementation reduces ambient background noise and achieves the lowest power and the best received voice quality. The AS3420 Bluetooth speaker driver can be used in both feed-forward and feedback configurations. The device allows for the development of simple low-order filters as well as complex multiple-order filters, thanks to the integrated low noise amplifiers (LNAs). In addition, the microphone input features a fully differential LNA, adjustable gain over 128 steps and OTP (one time programmable) ROM for factory setting of gain.

AS3400 and AS3420

The AS3400 and AS3420 tout 20 percent longer battery life and 10dB positive SNR.

The AS3400 is a low-power ANC speaker driver designed to reduce ambient background noise in wired headsets and improve the quality of converzations or listening to music. Similar to the AS3420, the AS3400 can be configured for feedback or feed-forward operation. Both receive path ICs and deliver up to 30dB of noise reduction. They also provide click- and pop-less operation at startup and during mode switching. The devices include highly efficient, low THD (total harmonic distortion) headphone amplifiers0.1 percent and 0.03 percent for the AS3420 and AS3400, respectively. Both driver ICs draw just 3.8mA at 1.5V and less than 1?A quiescent current in mono mode.

austriamicrosystems' AS3400 is housed in a 4 x 4mm QFN24 package. The ANC IC AS3420 comes in a QFN20 4 x 4mm package. Both speaker driver ICs operate with a 1-1.8V supply and are specified in a -20C to 85C temperature range. The ANC ICs AS3400 and AS3420 are available at $2.10 and $1.95, respectively, in 1000-piece quantities. A demo board is also available to speed development time.
