Texas Instruments Inc. has releases the ADS8028, a 12bit, 1MSps 8-channel successive-approximation-register (SAR) ADC. The device has a downloadable TINA-TI SPICE model that lets system designers simulate and characterize the full analog signal chain while still in software. The ADC features a low-drift internal voltage reference, wide external analog voltage reference range, wide analog and digital supply rangess and an internal temperature sensor.

Prior to the release of the ADS8028 ADC, designers could simulate, model and test only up to the SAR ADC, after which they had to build the ADC circuit in hardware. Now, with the downloadable TINA-TI SPICE model, designers will be able to fully verify ADC driving circuitry, speeding product development.

The ADS8028 ADC's TINA-TI reference design and product evaluation module (EVM) includes the OPA836 driver amplifier for fast software simulation and hardware evaluation.

It integrates an internal 2.5V reference, 1C accurate temperature sensor and internal multiplexer with sequencer; it also eliminates the need for an external decoupling capacitor.

It offers analog voltage supply range of 2.7V to 5.25 V, and digital voltage supply range of 1.65V to 5.25V, and external reference range of 1V to 5V. It consumes a maximum of 36?W in power-down mode across a wide operating temperature range of -40C to 125C in a 4 x 4mm package to support battery-powered, space-constrained designs.

It is suited for portable consumer electronics, wireless infrastructure and industrial equipment.

In addition to the TINA-TI SPICE model, an IBIS model is available to verify board signal integrity requirements. The ADS8028EVM-PDK is also available to expedite evaluation of the new ADC. It can be ordered today for US$199.

The ADS8028 is available today for a suggested retail price of $3.25 in 1,000-unit quantities.
