SmartFusion engine boosts vehicles stabilization, navigation

A data fusion engine designed to enhance vehicle stabilization and navigation has been developed by SBG Systems. The company's SmartFusion inertial navigation system is embedded in the IG-500 series, a lightweight and cost-effective MEMS-based range of inertial systems used on mobile equipment.

The IG-500 series includes the IG-500A; an Attitude and Heading Reference System; the IG-500N (which embeds a GPS to add navigation data) and the IG-500E that uses external aiding information such as RTK GP and the odometer.

SmartFusion is a deep redesign of the on-board Extended Kalman Filter based on field motion data. It was developed from thousands of hours of data logs using aircraft, ROVs, UGVs or UAVs. This release introduces major evolutions such as Motion Profiles for precise and easy sensor configuration; new dedicated features and strong sensor performance enhancements.

The new embedded technology's Motion Profiles also adjusts to vibration level, dynamic model, magnetic disturbance immunity and specific application constraints. The interface gives customers the freedom to choose some advanced parameters, and offers useful suggestions such as recommended heading sources or placement requirements.

To improve algorithm performance, the company worked closely with selected customers to represent main applications such as unmanned vehicles control, camera/antenna stabilization or aircraft avionics. Thousands of hours of data records were collected as a basis for algorithm writing. From this raw data, the development team was able to finely tune and validate complex algorithms on each environment.

All algorithms were tested and adjusted with a "hardware in the loop" process to check and prove sensor accuracy, reliability and performance.

The system is calibrated to application constraints for the best performance achievement. To install the IG-500 system in a fixed wing UAV, for example, one only has to select the Aircraft�High Dynamics? motion profile and all parameters will be automatically adjusted.
