Recent reports on Sharp Corp. paint a grim picture of the company's future. Fortunately, it's not all bad news for the Japanese electronics giant, at least within its Philippines operations.

Last September, Sharp Philippines Corp. (SPC) announced that it will be setting up an LCD/LED TV assembly operation in its Alabang manufacturing site, which can be found south of Manila. EE Times Asia was invited to the production kick-off, which happened on 8 November.

During the inauguration, SPC General Manager Takahiro Tanaka mentioned Sharp Global's current difficulties, stating that they are "aware of the situation." With regard to the company's decision to move part of the LCD/LED operations to the Philippines, Tanaka said, "Competition [in the Philippines] is stiff, but we believe there are more opportunities here."

SPC currently holds the third largest Sharp facility in Southeast Asia. The largest is in Malaysia, followed by Indonesia operations. The size of local operations depends on the size of the company's customer base. The rankings may be affected by bailout conditions recently received by Sharp Global, which hints at a Malaysian plant closure, but this report is currently unconfirmed.

LCD TV production

SPC is gradually phasing out the production of CRT TVs in the Alabang facility and replacing this with the LCD assembly. The LCD assembly operation is currently sharing a single line with CRT TV assembly and its LCD-video karaoke machine assembly.

Test production of the 24inch Aquos LCD TV has begun a week before the inauguration. According to Senior Manager for Manufacturing Engr. Allan Mercado, SPC is currently able to produce 4,000 24inch LCD TVs a month, which they plan to increase after March 2013. As the line is capable of producing 1,000 units/day, SPC's goal is to produce at least 24,000 units/month within the next five years.

SPC is only producing 24inch LCD TVs, but selling all available Sharp models in the Philippines. The company sources the rest of the models from the United States and Malaysia facilities. When asked if SPC is expecting to produce larger models locally, Asst. Marketing Communications Manager Cherryl Berin replied that they have no word on this from headquarters as of the moment.
