Newly appointed ARM CEO Simon Segars said in his keynote at the annual ARM TechCon last week that he would make it part of his legacy to extend his company's presence in the rapidly growing sphere of the Internet of Things (IoT). This would mean widening ARM's reach across data centre servers, mobile systems and wearable devices.

Among the highlights of the event are the latest Applied Micro, Cavium, and Texas Instruments ARM-based server boards and a new Freescale reference design board for wearables. Samsung also showcased a working prototype a chip stack using its Exynos mobile SoC and a Wide IO memory to deliver greater memory bandwidth and lower power, but would not comment on if or when such stacks would be merchant or internal products.

Mihail Stoyanov (above) demonstrates ARM's online mbed service that lets designers access tools and community services. The service is refocusing on IoT and next year will let engineers try out boards running in ARM's lab.
