Marvell pushes for FLC-MoChi approach

Why MoChi?

MoChi extends the ARM AXI SoC interconnect to off-chip interconnect, paving the way to more high performance 2 1/2 D designs.

As Kevin Krewell, principal analyst at Tirias Research, explained, "Many logic chip designs want to stop at 28nm, and many analogue designs don't get the scaling benefits of smaller geometries. Being able to mix multiple process generations into a system in package (SIP) can be a cost-effective alternative to SoC where the process is not optimised for all the chip functions."

During the keynote, Dai showed a slide illustrating the multi-chip module of application processor based on MoChi and DRAM FLC, designed for smartphones.

The beauty of using MoChi in SoC is that chip designers can customise product features by selecting different flavours of MoChi's, according to Dai. "MoChi makes the SoC highly scalable."

More important, though, MoChi can also save R&D costs and shorten time to market, she added. "Take a look at an LTE modem, for example," she said. "It takes a long time to get your global modem certified." By using modular chip architecture, SoC designers don't need to touch the certified LTE modem while mixing and matching other features in the MCM of an application processor.

The MoChi architecture isn't just for smartphone apps processor. "You can add a south bridge MoChi to turn this into an SoC for laptops; or add different connectivity MoChi to morph this into a set-top box SoC," Dai added.
