Transceiver module spec averts mismatching

Rev. 3.0 of the 400Gbit/s (16 x 25Gbit/s) pluggable electrical-to-optical transceiver specification has been released, according to the announcement made by the CDFP Multi-Source Agreement (MSA) at OFC 2015.

The release includes mechanical specifications for a new Style 3 module that's intended for active optical cables based on proposed draft specifications from the IEEE P802.3bs 400Gbit/s Ethernet task force. Style 3 modules will use the same connectors as Style 1 and Style 2 modules, but Style 3 modules address an issue of mating with Style 1 and Style 2 receptacles. Style 3 modules will be mechanically keyed to prevent incorrect mating. Figure 1 shows the modules.

CDFP electrical-to-optical interfaces support data rates of 25Gbit/s over 16 lanes. That's an aggregate data rate of 400Gbit/s through a single module. The CDFP 400Gbit/s interface specification defines short-body and long-body modules. Style 3 modules can be used with direct attach cables, active optical cables and optical modules.
