The $20 laptop unveiled by India's Tata is symbolic at so many levels of both the opportunity and the problem with "designing for India," that it's hard to know where to begin in weighing its chances for success.

Hi Patrick, This is Ramendra Baoni - so I found the article where you have quoted me (my company is Bisquare Systems.. and not Bsquare).www.bisquare.com. Please correct the 1% to 10% of Indian population. On the $20 laptop - let's accept that there is no technology today that can give a $20 laptop. People may be just passing a $20 computing device as a laptop - which can be anything that has a processor and some memory. Essentially there are many such $20 "laptops" - for example a Portable Media player that we have developed which Moser Baer retails for approx. $40 in India.
