The recent economic recession has focused companies on core competencies and collaborative efforts. EDA companies must focus on solutions rather than tools to help cut costs, says Cadence president Lip-Bu Tan.

Enabling significant re-use of Silicon-IP is indeed a necessary initiative to promote long-term growth in the semiconductor business. EDA design flows can certainly assist by focusing on IP integration. Automating, perhaps through pre-validation, the manual task of ensuring that multiple IPs; developed by different design teams/flows, from around the world, based on different versions of DR/SPICE models, and different tool versions & views will provide significant efficiencies and avoid checklist errors. My new firm, Silicon-IP, Inc., provides a complementary service to the EDA activity mentioned above. Silicon-IP, Inc. is the first and only independent IP procurement company. The deliverables to silicon design teams are technical and quality due diligence & license negotiations of 3rd party IP. As an outsourced service, we provide the unique capability to operate as an independent agent that aggregates a company’s 3rd party Silicon-IP requirements. Silicon-IP, Inc. provides even the smallest and newest design team access to the same or better knowledge, insight, and implementation skills as the largest semiconductor companies without the expensive cost of a dedicated full-time team of technical and business professionals. There is the added benefit that silicon design teams then focus their core competencies on HW/SW integration and not the highly replicated, standard business procedure of IP procurement. There are additional activities/mind-sets necessary to achieve the full benefit of IP reuse as a de-facto design methodology but these two initiatives provide a significant jump start today.
