Thunderbolt does not replace USB but rather complements it. The applications so far are impossible with USB's simplistic and inefficient protocol. RAID arrays, Fibre Channel, HD digitizers, external PCI-E chassis and graphics cards are all poor fits for USB.

The author was comparing apple-vs-pineapple. Thunderbolt was meant to serve different market and requirement. Though many developers like the the author wish one day to move USB3.0 into the application spaces which are targeted by the Thunderbolt, it is a deceiving tactics to make such unfare comparison to make the FUD. Every interface architecture has a limitation to how far it can be extended!

Thunderbolt would be perfect for server to server, or in any situation where daisy chaining is required. Of course it is overkill for a pointing device. Wake up author. Thunderbolt is not for normal usb devices but for easy connectivity for devices demanding higher throughput.
