Another new fun gadget from our neighbours in Japan. According to the Asahi Shimbun, Toshiba is currently developing a Lytro-like camera technology for smartphones to be released by late 2013. A Lytro light field camera, as seen below, captures all the available light in a scene going in every direction. It works by breaking up the main image with an array of microlenses over an image sensor.

This type of technology hasn't been put to use in smartphones or tablets. This is where Toshiba comes in.

The Asahi Shimbun explains that the camera will have 500,000 miniature lenses layered in front of a camera sensor within a cube-shaped module that's just one centimeter thick, reportedly allowing users to choose what part of a photo they'd like to focus on even after they've taken the shot. It will also enable users to put the entire picture into focus.

One more trick up the 'smartphonographers' sleeve.
