Back in January, the White House rejected a proposal posted on its We the People platform to build a Death Star. Yes, that Death Star. The lighthearted response indicated that the construction of the universe's ultimate weapon would be cost-prohibitive and not in keeping with the Obama Administration's policy of galactic peace.

The petition for a moon-size military battlestation armed with a planet-destroying superlaser attracted well more than the minimum 25,000 signatures. Paul Shawcross, the chief of the science and space branch at the White House Office of Management and Budget, explains that construction of the universe's ultimate weapon would cost $850 quadrillion ($850,000,000,000,000,000). It would then be ludicrous to spend such a ridiculous amount on "a Death Star with a fundamental flaw that can be exploited by a one-man starship."

Wannabe Dark Side supporters found the rejection unacceptable and has now started Kickstarter project gathering funds for a Death Star to be constructed with only open-source hardware and software. A pledge of $1.50 gets you a thanks and "the knowledge that we're one step towards a safer planet." A $15 pledge gets you all that plus your name etched onto the underneath of a MSE-6-series repair droid in use on the finished station.

The project has a modest initial goal of just $30 million. That's a heck of a long way to get to $850 quadrillion.
