In a bid to dominate the plasma display panel (PDP) TV market, Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd aims to sell 50,000 PDP TV receivers this year, 250,000 units in 2003 and 1 million units in 2005.

Gessung Choi, EVP of Samsung's Visual Display Division, said the company intends to make PDP TV receivers a mainstay of their business lines along with memory chips and LCDs. An annual marketing budget of $80 million has been allocated for the next five years.

In order to respond effectively to the growing demand, the company plans to establish offshore PDP TV receiver production facilities in Mexico and Hungary, with annual production capacities between 100,000 and 200,000 units by 2003. Samsung expects to be operating production lines for 37-inch, 42-inch, 50-inch and 63-inch models.
