Weifang Beida invests $47M in Li-ion battery production

Weifang Beida Jadebird Huaguang Technology Co. Ltd has invested $47 million in the production of Li-ion batteries. The company expects to produce 800 tons of positive pole, 400 tons of negative pole and 10 million units of Li-ion batteries, according to Ren Song-guo, board secretary.

"The popularity of cellphones brings a developing chance for Li-ion batteries. So far, China owns 85.26 million cellphones almost all of which use Li-ion batteries," noted Ren. "In 2000, the local market demand for Li-ion batteries was 80 million units, and in 2001, the demand doubled."

According to Ren, the company has established a specialized research institute for the project.
