TI DSPs pack more ROM, eliminate additional external memory

Claimed to integrate seven times more on-chip ROM, the TMS320C5404 and TMS320C5407 DSPs eliminate the need for additional external memory and expensive on-chip RAM in high-volume and cost-sensitive applications.

Code-compatible with the TMS320C5000 platform, the DSPs are designed to reduce overall system cost, size and power for applications including consumer digital audio, cellular phones and hands-free kits, speech recognition command and control, handheld gaming, toys, and advanced headsets.

The DSPs are the first C54x devices to offer a hardware-based UART to simplify interfacing to microcontrollers or wireless communication subsystems. It also provides three high-speed McBSPs (full 128-channel) and a large zero wait-state RAM and ROM. In addition, each DSP features a six-channel DMA, an 8-/16-bit HPI and 23 GPIO pins.

The C5404 has 16Kword RAM and 64Kword ROM, while the C5407 has 40Kword RAM and 120Kword ROM. Both DSPs operate with <50mW power dissipation at 120MHz at 1.5V core voltage and 3.3V I/O voltage. The devices also feature three power-management modes.

The C5404 and C5407 are priced at $8.57 and $14.50 each, respectively, in quantities of 10,000.
