The Gigabit Ethernet market did not reached the expected growth last year. However, "As product prices continue to decline and economic situation begins to bottom out, the shipments of the company's Gigabit-related products expect to grow dramatically," said Evelyn Wang, president of Cameo Communications Inc., the fourth largest network maker in Taiwan in terms of revenue.

Gigabit Ethernet NICs and switches accounted for 1.86 percent and 1.22 percent of Cameo's revenue last year, respectively. The company expects sales of NICs will grow to NT$150 million ($4.28 million at $1:NT$35.02) this year from NT$67 million ($1.91 million) in 2001, representing a growth of 123.8 percent. The sales for switches will reach NT$700 million ($19.99 million) this year, compared with NT$44 million ($1.26 million) in 2001.

"Positioned as advanced product, our Gigabit Ethernet NICs and switches were already available for mass production early last year," said Wang. "The strategy we implemented at the time is to lower the cost to make it more affordable. But due to the economic recession, performance of the market did not reach our expectation."

She says the company has received more and more requests for these products since last quarter. Plus, prices are expected to go down further. "All these factors will favor market growth," she adds.
