Fabless semiconductor startup Frontier Silicon claims to have established a new approach to highly integrated SoC silicon that will enable mass-market penetration of digital multimedia technology.

"Frontier Silicon chips will supply digital multimedia solutions to consumer electronics manufacturers worldwide. Our approach is to develop system silicon based on flexible, multi-threaded designs with high levels of integration which are highly cost-effective," said Anthony Sethill, founder.

The company recently launched its first product for advanced digital audio and multimedia, the Frontier Chorus processor, which is based on the META DBX-1 processor design developed by Digital One and Imagination Technologies. The single-chip multimedia processor, intended for low-cost mass-market consumer audio and data products, can implement all DAB (Digital Audio Broadcast) baseband and user interface functions on one device. The device is expected to ship in March.

Frontier Silicon expects to deliver a super-integrated SoC solution for digital TV-receiver applications, codenamed "Logie." The company says Logie will be a complete, highly cost-effective DVB-T (Digital Video Broadcast-terrestrial) system on one chip, enabling lowest-cost digital STBs to be available by the end of this year for digital TV receiver, PVR and home cinema applications. Logie is based on technologies licensed from Imagination Technologies including MPEG decode technology and the META processor architecture.

Frontier Silicon has already appointed sales and technical support representatives including Ultimate Marketing for the UK, Techno Rep for France and Iovox for South Korea, and will soon appoint representatives for Hong Kong, Japan, Germany, Scandinavia and Benelux.
