New analysis from Frost & Sullivan's "World Power Semiconductor" report reveals that this industry generated revenues of $17.7 billion in 2000 and is projected to increase steadily to $26.8 billion by 2005.

According to Frost & Sullivan industry analyst Sunderraju Ramachandran, mobile communication devices provide a tremendous market for power-management and smart-power ICs. Power ICs, with much smaller chip/board area requirement, provide a natural choice for portable communication applications such as mobile and cordless telephones.

Though the technology-driven power IC market is experiencing strong growth as a result of the communications industry's success, continued progress will be tied to manufacturer's ability to recognize and respond to end-user demands. Consumer needs for higher-performance products and the market premium for smart power devices are driving vendors to invest in next-generation technology.

Ramachandran added that power IC customers are demanding that the power items they purchase integrate as much functionality as possible into the smallest package. The need for highly functional and highly integrated power circuits is attracting increasing customer focus on R&D.
