Taiwan's research and development hub, the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI), said it would target emerging nanotechnologies by opening the Nano Technology Research Center.

ITRI officials said work is already under way at the new center on a range of nanotechnologies including separate laboratories for optoelectronics, systems, electronics research and materials. Establishing the new center will allow researchers here to integrate all resources under one roof and use them more effectively.

"To do that, one of [the center's] features is its technology network organization, making the center different from the other research and development institutes," said Jih-Chang Yang, ITRI's executive vice president and director of the nanotechnology research center. "Operation of the center will be based on a knowledge logistics team," which includes a committee to oversee nanotechnology research, laboratory operations, to promote industry cooperation and to plan international cooperation.

The new research center is located in an ITRI building that had served as Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co.'s first fabrication facility. The center will also include space for participating companies to use.

Center officials said they plan a broad spectrum of projects. "ITRI's studies in nanotechnology include science foundation, platform technologies as well as application technologies," said Tsung-tsan Su, the center's deputy director.
