Linear Technology CAN transceiver resists 160V overvoltage

The LT1796 CAN transceiver is claimed to withstand 115kV ESD strikes and overvoltage line faults of up to 160V, making it suitable for harsh environment applications such as industrial controls with 24V supplies or automotive applications. The device can also overcome loss of ground connection or cross-wiring faults without the need for external protection circuitry.

The LT1796 includes a combined slew rate control/standby pin that reduces the supply current to 8005A in standby mode. The slew rate control allows a maximum data rate of 500Kbps or can be programmed for slower rates to minimize EMI emissions and reduce reflections due to long stubs or improper termination.

The transceiver has a high input impedance that supports up to 256 nodes, and a 115kV air gap test and 18kV contact mode test. The LT1796 also offers short-circuit protection on all outputs and thermal shutdown protection.

The LT1796 is offered in either 8-pin SOP or PDIP, and is available for both the commercial and industrial temperature ranges.
