Maxim MOSFET offers 1.4A to 2.1A current range

The MAX1922 high-side MOSFET power switch features a 1.4A to 2.1A current limit range. This permits the use of smaller and low-cost power supply components because they can be sized to accommodate lower overcurrent fault conditions.

The switch features a preset 1.75A current limit (120 percent, max., at -400C to 850C) that protects power distribution systems in PC Cards, USB, and other hot-swap plug-in applications used by laptops, desktop PCs, and PDAs.

For shorted outputs, the MAX1922 provides a foldback scheme that reduces the current through the switch to 2.1A. For overcurrent conditions, a signal notifies the microprocessor that the device is in current limit, thermal shutdown, or undervoltage lockout mode. The MAX1922 also features an internal 10ms blanking period that prevents short-duration, high-current transients from causing the overcurrent pin to go low unnecessarily.

The MAX1922 has an input voltage range of 2.7V to 5.5V for use in 3V and 5V systems. It has a quiescent current of 165A in the on state and drops to 2nA in the off state. The 70-milliohm IC also features a thermal-overload protection that automatically limits power dissipation and junction temperature to safe levels.

The MAX1922 is quoted at 99 cents for quantities of 1,000 and above, and is available in 8-pin SOPs.
