Using 0.185m CMOS production technology, the L6315 integrates into a single chip all DVD front-end functions including analog preprocessing, servo control, channel decoding and error correction. The SoC device supports playback of all popular DVD and CD formats including CD-audio, DVD-RW and DVD+RW playback.

The chip features a microcontroller, a dedicated core for DSP and an analog interface that connects to the photo-detector on all popular DVD pick-ups. The L6315 is suitable for use with the company's OMEGA (STi55xx) DVD back-end decoders.

The TQFP144 device also provides a backward-compatible and unified memory mode functions. In the backward-compatible mode, the chip, in conjunction with an external memory, handles the error-correction function and connects to back-end devices such as the company's STi5508/STi5519. The unified memory mode is designed to eliminate the need for external front-end memory when the L6315 is combined with the next-generation OMEGA family devices.

The L6315 is supported by an emulation version in a TQFP176 housing, an evaluation board and associated software tools for applications development.
