The TOP250 monolithic switcher IC delivers 290W of output power, addressing the high-power needs of applications such as desktop PCs, small servers, DTV receivers and audio amplifiers. Claimed to be the industry's highest ac/dc power converter monolithic IC, the TOP250 also features the company's EcoSmart technology, which reduces energy consumption, especially in standby and no-load conditions.

A member of the TOPSwitch-GX family, the TOP250 features soft-start for minimum overshoot and lower component stresses at start-up, frequency jittering for low EMI, undervoltage protection and overvoltage shutdown, and programmable current limit.

"Power Integrations ICs are widely used in the standby power supply in PCs. With the introduction of TOP250, we have expanded the power capability of the TOPSwitch-GX family to also address the full range of designs used in the main power supply for desktop PCs," said Balu Balakrishnan, Power Integration president and COO. "This development positions Power Integrations to satisfy both standby and main power supply design needs allowing us to provide two chips per desktop PC."

The device is available in a TO-220 (TOP250Y) and TO-262 (TOP250F) package, as well as TO-263/D2PAK (TOP250R-TL). Pricing for the devices, in 1,000-piece quantities, is $3.29 each for the TOP250Y and TOP250F, and $3.32 each for the TOP250R-TL.
