The ProSavageDDR PN266T is claimed to be the first mobile chipset to support fast DDR266 memory for the mobile Pentium III processor, as well desktop Pentium III, Celeron and the company's own C3 processor-based notebook PCs. The company also claims that the chipset reduces power consumption through a 30 percent reduction in memory voltage.

Previously codenamed Twister-T DDR, the PN266T incorporates an S3 Graphics ProSavage8 2D/3D engine with AGP 8X equivalent bandwidth. This enables the PN266T to deliver high video quality for applications like DVD playback, while eliminating the need for a discrete graphics card.

"The combination of DDR memory and integrated graphics is a good fit for mobile systems because it offers an appealing balance of performance, power consumption and price," said Mike Feibus, principal of Feibus Strategic Consulting in Scottsdale, Arizona. "Integrated graphics chipsets are taking a growing slice of the mobile market, and the emergence of DDR memory support should accelerate this trend."

Manufactured via a 0.225m, three-metal layer process, the PN266T features a 133MHz FSB, six USB ports and extends support to ATA 33/66/100 devices. It also supports Intel's SpeedStep power management.

The PN266T also integrates two-channel AC-97 audio, MC-97 Modem and dual-channel LVDS. An integrated 3Com networking MAC is optional.
