Velio Communications Inc., a developer of high-speed communications semiconductors, has partnered with cable assemblies supplier W.L. Gore & Associates Inc. to develop electrical backplane extensions for 2.5Gbps traffic that exceeds 20m.

According to the companies, electrical backplane extensions that support 2.5Gbps traffic for greater than 20m enables optical switch manufacturers to build lower-cost switching systems, since electrical extensions are far less costly than optical extensions for shelf-to-shelf and cabinet-to-cabinet connections.

The 20m electrical backplane extension will include Velio's signal integrity capabilities and Gore's EYE-OPENER plus cable technology. Velio's pre-emphasis technology extends the limits of data transmission through copper cables while Gore's plus cable technology incorporates self-equalization with the cable, the companies explained.

Bill Woodruff, Velio's VP of marketing, commented, "The optical equipment manufacturers now have a solid bottomline financial reason to look at electrical instead of optical extensions for their shelf-to-shelf connections. Twenty meters solves a lot of co-location issues."
