BI Technologies surface-mount inductor handles 20A

The Magnetic Components division of BI Technologies, a subsidiary of TT Electronics, has launched a line of low-profile, surface-mount inductors with a closed magnetic-circuit design for high-density PCB assemblies.

Inductors in the HM65 series feature a low-loss ferrite core with 20A current capability. The inductors are designed especially for machine placement, and are compatible with vapor-phase and infrared-reflow soldering.

The closed magnetic-circuit design is conducive to high-density board assembly and thus is said to suit applications requiring efficient use of limited board space, such as laptops, said David Smolik, director of product development. "Combining high-current capabilities and low dc resistance in a surface-mount package enables this inductor to maintain high performance in a range of demanding applications," he added.

The devices feature inductance ratings from 15H to 105H (inductance measured at 100kHz, 0.25V). Current rating is from 5A to 20A. DC resistance ranges from 2.5 milliohms to 13.5 milliohms. Operating temperature range from -250C to 1350C. Custom designs are available. Typical pricing is <$1 in quantities of 100,000. Lead times range from eight to 10 weeks.

The company has also begun to offer a series of surface-mount inductors that can handle continuous currents up to 27A. These high-frequency HM74 series inductors are constructed with a ferrite core material that exhibits low losses at frequencies up to 5MHz. The units can be tailored to meet customers' voltage and inductance requirements.

The surface-mount inductors measure about 15-by-15-by-5mm, which makes them suitable for laptop and notebook computers, and dc/dc converters in distributed power systems or voltage regulator modules.

The inductance ratings range from 0.45H to 6.35H, and current ratings from 6.5A to 26A. The inductance is measured at 100kHz, 0.25V. The operating temperature range is -250C to 1350C. Typical pricing is <$1 in volume quantities. Lead time is 10 to 12 weeks.
