Designed for low-cost DVD players, the VirtualSurround VBX software receives and processes a two-channel, rather than a 5.1-channel, stream, which may enable manufacturers to reduce decoder royalties paid to third parties. The company claims the software provides listeners with a wider soundstage without coloring the sound.

The surround-sound enhancement software is derived from head-related transfer function modeling and crosstalk cancellation technology. In addition to DVD-Video playback, the VirtualSurround VBX is also suited for enhancing MP3-encoded music as well as DVD-Audio.

The software can also be partnered with the Spatializer PCE, Spatializer Vi.B.E. for enhanced bass response and Spatializer Natural headphones. The software can be further upgraded up through the company's Spatializer N-2-2 Ultra for multichannel virtual surround sound.

The VirtualSurround VBX is now available to OEMs on Zoran Corp.'s Vaddis IV processor and will be available on the Ziva-4 processor from LSI Logic.
