Alpha sampling phase detectors operate up to 22GHz

Claimed to be the industry's first surface-mount sampling phase detectors to utilize a unique hybrid assembly design, the SPD family is designed for use in VSAT and LMDS applications that operate in the 18GHz to 22GHz range.

The detectors are available in low-drive (SPD1101-111), medium-drive (SPD1102-111) and high-drive (SPD1103-111) versions. They can be used for applications allowing reference frequencies below 50MHz and to phase-lock microwave VCOs frequencies to as high as 22GHz.

The detectors consist of a step recovery diode used to generate a harmonic comb of the reference oscillator frequency. A Schottky diode pair mixes between the closest reference frequency multiple and the microwave signal generated by the VCO. When these frequencies are identical, the IF (beat note) signal is a DC voltage, otherwise the IF will be sinusoidal.

The design occupies lesser board space and allows the use of automated assembly techniques. The detectors have an operating temperature range of -650C to 1500C and an incident power of 27dBm.

The SPD1100 series are priced at $10 each in quantities of 1,000.
