TI RISC microcontroller draws 0.65A during standby

The MSP430 family of 16-bit RISC mixed-signal processors draws 0.65A during standby mode and can switch to high-performance processing in <65s, permitting the processor to maintain standby mode up to 1,000 times longer than other microcontrollers.

The SoC device enables system designers to simultaneously interface to analog signals, sensors and digital components while consuming low power. It is suitable for applications where both analog and DSP are required such as utility metering, portable measurement and intelligent sensing.

The MSP430F43x/F44x devices incorporate up to 60KB Flash, 2KB of RAM, a 160-segment LCD controller, a 200KSa/s 12-bit ADC and a comparator. They also contain two PWM timers, two hardware USARTs, a 16-bit hardware multiplier and an on-board supply voltage supervisor.

The eight-channel ADC comes built-in with a programmable S/H, on-chip RC oscillator, temperature sensor, low battery detection, and an auto scan with a 16-word buffer that supports high-speed mixed-signal processing.

The entire clock system is driven by a 32kHz watch crystal that reduces high frequency EMI, eliminating the need for a second high speed crystal. The MSP430 also has an embedded real-time JTAG emulation, which allows devices to be programmed either in stand-alone sockets or in system via dedicated JTAG pins.

Housed in a 100-pin PZ QFP case, the MSP430F449 is priced at $7.03 each in quantities of 1,000. The MSP-FET430P440 IDE Flash emulation tool is available for $99.
