Linear Technology regulator operates at 90 percent efficiency

The LTC3831 regulator is claimed to sink or source up to 15A of load current and operate at 90 percent efficiency. The chip is designed for DDR memory termination in devices such as servers, telecom switch boxes, storage (RAID controller) and networking systems, and next-generation laptops.

The 16-pin SSOP device generates a termination voltage equal to one-half of the system's reference voltage without requiring external resistor dividers. This enables the LTC3831 to support a termination voltage range from 4V down to 1.1V.

The regulator also includes a 200kHz PWM oscillator for low-output ripple operation that can be externally adjusted or synchronized with an external signal from 100kHz to above 500kHz. It has an input supply range of 3V to 8V and draws <10mA during shutdown mode.

The LTC3831 is priced at $2.90 each in quantities of 1,000.
