Lumitex fiber-optic panels to replace CCFLs

With current consumption placed at 10mA to 20mA (2Vdc) and a lifespan of 100,000h, the company's LED-driven fiber-optic panels are positioned to replace cold-cathode fluorescent lamps (CCFLs) to backlight LCDs.

Typical applications for the panels include LCDs in membrane switches, digital controllers, test and measurement equipment, and medical instrumentation.

A single panel as thin as 0.33m, can uniformly spread out the light from a single LED up to about 100-by-250mm. It can backlight LCDs without using an inverter and generate no heat or EMI. The company also claims that the panels are unaffected by shock, vibration or extremes in temperature and humidity.

The Lumitex panels consist of one to eight layers of panels assembled together with double-sided adhesive. A polyester reflector is laminated on the back, while a clear vinyl top layer is added for durability. A semi-transparent diffusion later is placed between the top weave and clear vinyl layer.

The optical fibers extend from the panel in cable form and are bundled into a brass ferrule connected to a remote light source such as single LED. Standard LED colors include green, white, blue, red, amber and yellow-green.

The fiber-optic panels are priced from $8 to $30 each depending on the size and quantity.
