Linear Tech boost converter switches up to 4.5MHz

Claimed to be the industry's fastest switching boost dc/dc converter, Linear Technology's LT1310 can switch at frequencies as high as 4.5MHz enabling the use of tiny ceramic capacitors and small, low profile inductors.

The device has an integrated PLL that allows the user to maintain accurate control of the switching frequency. This keeps switching noise within a very narrow bandwidth, minimizing potential interference with communication bands. This is essential in applications such as instrumentation, avionics, communications, and data acquisition.

The switching frequency of the LT1310 can be set from 10kHz to 4.5MHz with an external capacitor. The device can be operated in either free-running or phase-locked mode. A wide PLL capture range of about 2:1 allows the free-running frequency to be set using standard 10 percent tolerance NPO dielectric capacitors. It can also be synchronized to an external frequency source via the external sync pin.

The LT1310 has a saturation Vce of 240mV at 1A switch current. It operates at a voltage input range of 2.75V to 18V and can deliver output voltages of up to 35V. The chip also generates up to 400mA of output current at 12V from a 5V input at efficiencies of up to 85 percent.

The LT1310 is offered in a thermally-enhanced 10-lead MSE package.
