Altera design software reduces compile times by 50 percent

Version 2.0 of the Quartus II SOPC design software is includes the LogiLock design flow that is claimed to improve performance in block-level design by 15 percent, and the fast-fit compile option that reduces compile times by 50 percent. The compiling scheme is also claimed to reduce installed software sizes in UNIX-based networks by up to 60 percent.

The software can be used with all company's high-density PLDs, including the APEX II product line including APEX 20KE and APEX 20KC. It also extends support to the MAX 3000A, MAX 7000AE, and MAX7000B devices, as well as the ARM-based Excalibur embedded processor solutions.

The LogicLock design flow can put complete control of block placement into the hands of the designer, allowing user-assisted floor planning. It also maintains system performance during construction of large SOPC designs by allowing designers to improve and lock in the performance of each design block individually.

The new fast fit compile option performs fewer iterations of the fitting algorithm during placement resulting to a faster compile time with a minimal impact on design performance.

The software also includes SignalProbe technology that accelerates the verification process and complements the SignalTap embedded logic analysis feature. SignalProbe allows users to incrementally route an internal node to an unused pin for analysis while fully preserving the design's original routing, timing, and design files.

Quartus II also creates complete HDL testbenches and supports the design of high-speed I/O by generating design-specific I/O buffer information specification (IBIS) models that can be exported to various EDA signal integrity tools. The IBIS models are customized based on the I/O standard settings for each pin in the design and simplify analysis in third-party tools.

The software supports major operating systems, including Windows 2000/NT/98, Sun Solaris and HP-UX.

The Quartus II version 2.0 is available through Altera's software subscription program at an annual subscription fee of $2,000 for a node-locked PC license. This includes full-featured Quartus II and MAX+PLUS II design software, OEM synthesis tools from Exemplar Logic, OEM simulation tools from Model Technology, and 12 months of software upgrades.
