Molex transceivers operate over multi-, single-mode fibers

The MuxLink series of WWDM transceivers operates over both multi- and single-mode fibers, allowing up to 300m transmission distance in multimode fibers, while supporting up to 10km distances in single-mode fibers.

The WWDM LX4 transceivers are designed to meet the IEEE 802.3ae 10Gb Ethernet 10GBase-LX4 PMD standard and are compliant with the XENPAK MSA that uses the XAUI electrical interface.

Each MuxLink transceiver has four 3.125Gbps DFB lasers which are optically multiplexed to give 10Gbps data throughput. "Since signal speed within the transceiver is maintained at 3.125Gbps the electronics for 10GBase-LX4 are simpler to implement than competing serial module implementations, which must drive a laser at 10.3Gbps," says John Dallesasse, Group Development Manager at Molex Fiber Optics.

"This allows the use of lower cost lasers and electronics and may enable operation at longer distances over single-mode fiber than 10GBase-LR serial transceivers," he added.

The MuxLink LX4 module is hot-pluggable and packaged in the industry-standard XENPAK form factor. It has a duplex SC connector used as an optical interface for XENPAK.
