A fresh round of layoffs at Tality Corp., Cadence Design Systems' services organization, will take the employee count to around 700?roughly half of Tality's size in January 2001. Tality announced that it will discontinue board-level, mechanical and packaging services for data and telecommunications equipment and that it will lay off about 200 people in the process.

Hard-hit by reductions in spending for design services, Tality underwent at least two rounds of layoffs in 2001. In the second quarter of last year, Cadence took $66 million in restructuring charges related to Tality layoffs. Now, in the first quarter of 2002, Cadence expects to take a further, $25 million charge.

Tality will close its design centers in Ottawa; Lowell, Massachusetts; and Noida, India. Meanwhile, the company says it will increase its focus on communications IC design and IP used in wireline communications equipment.

The latest restructuring has no impact on Tality's wireless business, according to the company.
