Using a multimode fiber, Altra Broadband's xDSM transceiver board extends transmission distance to up to 3.5km, representing an improvement of ten times over the IEEE Gigabit Ethernet standard. This was done on a 62.5?m fiber using a single 850nm VCSEL without the use of mode-conditioning patchcords or any additional optics for mode filtering.

On single-mode fiber, the system was used to transmit a gigabit-speed xDSM waveform over 26km with a six-fold improvement in bandwidth efficiency.

The transceiver system utilizes the company's proprietary xDSM technologya combination of DSP, multi-level signaling, and subcarrier multiplexing. Transceiver implementation was accomplished using programmable logic and a custom PCB.

All baseband signal processing functions including initialization, channel equalization and subcarrier multiplexing were implemented using FPGAs.
