The SP8040 is a high-performance four-channel PDIC that combines a photodetector array and high-speed analog processing in a single chip for the pick-up head read-channel. The chip enables faster read speeds for DVD-RW, DVD-RAM and CD-RW systems.

Manufactured using CMOS process, the IC captures and converts light energy, reflected by the optical media, into electrical signals that are subsequently conditioned to create normalized output signals. Previously, high-speed designs use at least two separate devices to perform this function, with the read speed limited by the parasitics introduced by the added interconnections.

The SP8040 has a data channel bandwidth of 100MHz and a specified responsivity at 650nm. It has a delay error of <1ns at 52MHz and offset drift of <40?V/C. The chip also has an offset voltage of <25mV and a gain of -77dB.

Sipex has also released an automatic power-control device that uses the same optical technology of the SP8040. This device monitors laser light intensity and provides closed-loop control of the power used to drive the laser diode.
