Wireless Online's ClearBeam 900 Smart Applique smart antenna system is positioned as an add-on to existing network infrastructure, and is claimed to provide network operators with a 200 percent capacity improvement and 300 percent coverage improvement over conventional sector solutions.

Launched at the 3GSM World Congress in Cannes, France, the system is also claimed to deliver a 60 percent improvement in dropped calls, C/I improvement of up to 18dB, and reduced interference by as much as 500 percent over traditional solutions.

"GSM currently makes up 70 percent of the wireless subscriber base worldwide. The ClearBeam 900 Smart Applique provides a solution for this market today, and scales to support GPRS and emerging 3G networks," said Greg Oslan, CEO of Wireless Online.

Figures have shown that by 2005, more than one billion people will be using wireless devices, driving the need for continued global infrastructure expansion and service optimization. Traditionally, wireless operators have addressed network capacity problems by buying additional spectrum or adding new cell sites.

But the scarcity of available spectrum and the prohibitive cost of building new basestations to accommodate capacity demands have driven the demand for operators to adopt smart antenna technology as a cost-effective way to deliver address those problems.

ClearBeam 900 utilizes multiple, narrow beams and adaptive processing to avoid interference and select the strongest signal-improving capacity and closing coverage gaps. In addition, the Smart Applique improves communications quality in problem areas, such as multi-story office buildings and high-traffic environments.

As an add-on, the system easily connects to any GSM basestation, making it suitable for new and expanding GSM wireless networks. The ClearBeam 900 also improves uplink and downlink performance, increases throughput and substantially reduces dropped calls, while conserving scarce spectrum resources.
