Zoran processor powers up to 4.3-megapixel cameras

The company's COACH Vp digital camera processor powers 2.3-megapixel to 4.3-megapixel resolution cameras and captures high-resolution images, as well as capture movie clips with audio at over 25fps. Another version of the processor, the COACH Ve, is designed to power digital cameras with 1.3-megapixel to 2.3-megapixel resolution.

Both fifth-generation chips also offer a dedicated on-chip hardware that allows complete emulation of a 3X zoom for fixed focus cameras. Previous versions of the COACH processor power camera models from manufacturers such as Agfa, Casio, Kodak, Minolta, Ricoh, Samsung, and Toshiba.

"Innovative features such as enhanced image processing, accelerated motion capture, and lens shading compensation coupled with a strong emphasis on system level cost reductions and extended battery life, result in an unprecedented digital camera solution," said Coby Sella, vice president and general manager, Digital Camera Division, at Zoran.

The COACH V series also feature <1s power-up time and click-to-click time, audio support for stereo music playback, image annotation, and video clip recording. It also extends support for Flash memory cards and features integrated control functions, eliminating the need for an external microcontroller within the camera system.

The processor also provides USB and RS-232 interface, and supports progressive and interlaced CCD sensors, as well as CMOS sensors.

The company is also offering a firmware for the processor to enable camera designers to add algorithms and modify the firmware to meet specific camera requirements. The COACH V development package includes a set of software tools, PC drivers, and a reference design platform.
