Velio Communications Inc. and Alvesta have completed the interoperability testing of Velio's SONET-EOS (eye-optimizing serdes) family with Alvesta's 3100 optical transceiver.

The combined technologies are expected to give customers a complete, low-cost OC-192 VSR optics solution for rapid deployment of next-generation networking equipment. The VSR optics and electronics solution is suitable for cabinet-to-cabinet short-reach OC-192 connectivity in CO and data center environments.

The VC1021 connects to the system via an SFI-4-compliant 16-by-622MHz LVDS interface and electrically connects directly to the Alvesta 3100 with a single set of four 2.488Gbps to 2.67Gbps CML streams. The Alvesta 3100 transceiver optically transmits SONET data compatible with the OIF VSR4-0.30 standard up to 300mm over a single fiber ribbon utilizing standard grade 500MHz/km, 50/1255m multimode fiber, the companies explained.

To test the chip's performance, the companies interfaced the VC1021 to the Alvesta 3100, allowing it to transmit and receive SONET data over multimode fiber error-free over a distance of 300mm.
