Claimed to be the world's first low-power amplifier with AGC, the MAX3861 is specifically designed for WDM transmission systems using optical amplifiers.

Operating from a single 3.3V supply, the device linearly amplifies or attenuates the input signal to a fixed output voltage swing in a fully differential approach. Both the input and output are on-chip terminated to match 50-ohm lines.

The AGC amplifier accepts differential or single-ended CML input data at rates up to 2.7Gbps. The differential output swing can be adjusted from 400mV to 920mV (typ.) over a 46dB input dynamic range. Variation in output swing is controlled to within 0.5dB over a 16dB input variation.

The MAX3861 provides an RSSI that is linear within five percent for input signal levels up to 100mV peak-to-peak and a LOS indicator with programmable threshold.

The MAX3861 is available in a 24-pin QFN package with exposed pad and operates over the -40C to 85C temperature range. Prices start at $14.25 for quantities of 1,000 and up.
