Bell Labs, the R&D division of Lucent Technologies, has developed a semiconductor laser that emits light over a broad spectrum of infrared wavelengths. The new device will be used in applications such as optical communications, sensitive chemical detectors, and semiconductor lasers for fiber-optics

Bell Labs has stacked, one on top of the other, about 650 different layers of standard semiconductor materials used in photonics?much like a multilayered club sandwich?to fabricate the new laser. These layers are grouped into 36 stacks. Each stack has slightly different optical excitation properties and generates light over a short but characteristic wavelength range, while remaining transparent to the rest. When all the stacks are combined, they cooperate to produce broadband laser emission, the company said.
